AI part 1, Everyone’s Talking About AI

Artificial intelligence, or AI, can get a bad rap in the media. But when used well, it has the power to make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

By employing artificial intelligence to support and improve existing businesses, Mitsubishi Electric is developing AI for today and tomorrow’s consumer. Called Maisart (an abbreviation for ‘Mitsubishi Electric's AI creates the State-of-the-ART in technology’), the proprietary AI uses machine learning to develop clever and efficient driving models. The technology is constantly being refined. Next steps are to reduce the computation amount and time to make AI more efficient, and cheaper to develop.

Learning from their theoretical work and innovative experiments, Mitsubishi Electric are focusing on practical applications. The new e-Evolution concept car, unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show 2017 featured an artificial intelligence (AI) system to not replace, but augment the driver’s capabilities. Driver-assist systems monitor the driver’s face and heartbeat, as well as steering wheel movements, to warn of distraction or tiredness. Readings of motor noise and temperature can help predict breakdowns, while sensors allow the AI system to read changes in the road and traffic conditions. A special coaching function can improve a driver’s ability by monitoring the driver’s skill and relaying advice.
